iDock C10 dual monitors disconnect intermittently

Hi!

I hope you are well.

Please see my issue below:
On both Windows and Linux I am experiencing the intermittent connection. It appears as if it might only be my screens that disconnect and then connect again, it does seem that the indicator lights on the iDock C10 does not flicker when this happens.
I have now also experienced this disconnection on my Macbook Pro, on the Macbook Pro it disconnects and just does not reconnect again…
Note: This happens even when the iDock is at a cool temperature and not running hot at all…
Macbook Pro is in clamshell mode, and when switching over to it, the screen is duplicated (for now this is fine, I just want to fix the flickering…)

Hardware Details:
KVM Switch: iDock C10 - S/N: A24L0609 (Ordered - January 31, 2025 : amazon.com)

PC:

Laptop:
Macbook Pro 2019

Connections:
Using all cables supplied with KVM switch
Wireless receivers for keyboard and mouse plugged in to the front of KVM switch.
No other USB ports used at the back apart from the USB data cable supplied with the KVM.
HDMI Out 1 → Samsung SF350 24" FHD Thin Bezel Monitor (60Hz)
HDMI Out 2 → Connects to Samsung LF24T35 24" LCD Monitor (75Hz)
HDMI cables connecting both monitors to the KVM (Hight speed HDMI cable with Ethernet AWG E202888)
USB cable running from KVM to PC is connected to USB 2.0 (it was also connected to USB 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2)

I have tried changing the USB port used on my PC.
I have tried unplugging the Macbook from the KVM
I have tried swapping the HDMI Out 1 and 2 cables around.
I have tried using the different ports on my GPU… GPU has 1 HDMI and 3 DP’s. Cables given with KVM is 1 DP and 1 HDMI
I have tried having both monitors at 60Hz refresh rate
I have tried having the one monitor at 75Hz refresh rate and the other one at 60Hz refresh rate.
I have tried restarting the KVM and also checking the firmware version, it is on V4.0

Thank you in advance.

Regards

Hi Ciabatta,

Thank you for reaching us and we are really sorry for the issues.
Both the USB-C laptop and desktop have this issue or only the USB-C laptop?
For the laptop, you can try use other your own USB-C cable to have a test, such as the 40Gbps cable or Thunderbolt 4 cable.
The provided USB-C cable is USB 3.2 Gen 2.

Hi Kevin, both the Macbook Pro and the desktop seem to have the same problem. Screens disconnecting intermittently. It appears to happen at random times…

Hi,

Which monitor have this issue or both two?
What are their output resolution and refresh rate?
How about try lowering the problem monitor with a lower resolution or refresh rate to have a test?
And also try replace with other HDMI cable for the monitors to check.

Monitors giving issues:

  • It is both monitors. So both monitors disconnect and reconnect at the same time everytime.

Ouput resolution and refresh rate:

  • Monitor 1 : Samsung SF350 24" FHD Thin Bezel Monitor (60Hz) 1920x1080
  • Monitor 2 : Samsung LF24T35 24" LCD Monitor (75Hz) 1920x1080
  • I tried setting Monitor 1 to 60Hz (1920 x 1080) and Monitor 2 to 75Hz (1920 x 1080) and the disconnects still happen.
  • I tried setting both monitors to 60Hz and 1920 x 1080 and the disconnects still happen.

Other HDMI Cables:

  • I have also tried with different HDMI cables on one and both monitors and it still happens.

So I think I might have solved my intermittent disconnections on Linux. I will post my solution below. I had to go and dig around in the journalctl of Linux. I ended up in the journalctl because I was looking for a place where I can maybe find log files from the iDock, because I do not know whether the iDock keeps log files on board, if so, I have no clue as to how to access those.

A suggestion from my side would be a place where log files can be written from the iDock and accessed by users. I know these things are not always easy to do, so it is merely a suggestion.

On Linux in my terminal, I ran the following command, I ran this command directly after I saw the disconnect happen:
sudo journalctl --since="-1minutes", so the time indicates how far back it displays the log file, the output looked as follows:

The primary cause appears to be a conflict with the brltty service, which is designed to support braille devices. Here is what I could see in the log above:

  • At 22:56:23, multiple USB disconnect events occur, indicating that the peripherals disconnected.
  • Then at 22:56:25-29, they reconnect again
  • Finally at 22:56:29, brltty tried to take over a USB interface that was already used by something else:
brltty[13228]: USB configuration set error 16: Device or resource busy
brltty[13228]: USB interface in use: 0 (ch341)
usb 1-5.3: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by ch341 while 'brltty' sets config #1
ch341-uart ttyUSB0: ch341-uart converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0

The system detects the iDock’s USB serial chip, but then the brltty service thinks it is a braille display and causes a conflict, that then in turn causes the intermittent disconnections.

The solutions that worked:

  • I had to disable the ‘brltty’ service by running the following commands in my terminal on Linux.
sudo systemctl stop brltty
sudo systemctl disable brltty
  • Then I ran the command below, this prevents the service from being started by any means - manually, at boot, or when triggered by another service or device.
sudo systemctl mask brltty
  • Then disable the udev rule that triggers brltty for USB devices, By removing these rules, it stops the detection and application of braille devices, even devices that might appear as braille devices:
sudo rm /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/*brltty*.rules

I am not at all a Linux expert, so I would say, err on the side of caution. I was taking a risk, because I was becoming tired of the intermittent disconnections. Linux is my daily OS (even if I am not an expert, I am trying to learn). I think it also happened with the Macbook Pro because the KVM uses EDID, so the Desktop PC is tricked into thinking the displays are still there… So when the braille device interrupts again, the screens disconnects even when on MacOS.

I hope this can help someone… My problem seems to be solved. Thank you for your time Kevin.

Hi,

Appreciate for your sharing and your solution is very useful to us and other customers.

This has also fixed a few other problems that were noticeable, but I was not worried about at the moment of creating this post…

  1. The iDock is not getting super hot anymore, it is warm, but not hot, it is room temperature now.

  2. Switching between my Desktop PC and my Macbook Pro laptop is instant now, where usually switching from my Desktop PC to my Macbook Pro took about 10 seconds, and status indicator on the iDock itself stayed on the Desktop PC indicator for that whole 10 seconds before switching over to the Laptop indicator.

  3. Then when the active device was the Macbook Pro, sometimes only 1 screen would come on, the other would not come on, but now both screens come on as well.

Hi,

Appreciate for you update and will submit to our engineer your these information.
Have a good day!
