iDock C20 (Macbook Pro laptop with PC Desktop) can't get it to see PC monitor

Hello all,

I’ve been scratching my head for several hours trying to figure this out. I recently bought a Macbook Pro with M4 chip. I was previously using a custom built desktop PC. Prior to getting my macbook, I was using my desktop for the following:

Music Production
Video Production
Gaming (not too often)

After a lot of research I felt that a move to Mac would be better for music/video production. I was hoping to continue to use the PC for gaming but be able to use the same peripherals for both PC desktop and Macbook laptop. This is what is currently being used on my PC desktop:

Focusrite interface 18i20 USB
Arturia mini midi keyboard USB
Fractal FM9 (guitar amp modeler) USB
Stream Deck USB
Sony mirrorless camera with Elgato capture USB

I’d like to share these with my macbook Pro depending on the situation.

I really have no clue what I’m doing but based on my research, I found the a docking station with KVM switch would be a great match. I went ahead and purchased the iDock C20. I understand that this states 2 laptop. After reading the C20 FAQ, i found this:

3. Can I connect to a laptop and a PC?

While the iDock C20 is primarily designed for use with two laptops, it can also connect a laptop and a desktop PC, offering flexibility depending on your setup needs. If your desktop has a USB-C port supporting video output.

Problem:

The problem that I’m having is that my desktop only has 3 display ports and 1 HDMi port. The C20 uses Type C so I figured that I’d buy and adapter that goes type C to HDMi (C20 to desktop). Unfortunately, this did not work. I have the following configuration:

Macbook - C20 USB in 1 Type C to Type C in Macbook
PC desktop - C20 USB in Type C to Display Port in Dekstop (I used both an adapter and a Type C to Display port cable).

HDMI out is going to HDMI into Samsung - 49" Odyssey G9 G91F 1000R Curved Dual QHD 144Hz 1ms AMD FreeSync Premium Pro Gaming Monitor with HDR600.

I am able to get my Macbook to display into my monitor but when I switch to desktop, nothing is detected.

Here are my PC specs

Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 UNIFY AM4 AMD X570 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Graphics card: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6GB GDDR6 PCI Express 3.0 x16 ATX Graphics Card GV-N166SGAMING OC-6GD

Sorry for t he long post, I’m really hoping to get this figured out.

Kind regards,

Eddi

Hi Eddi,

For a Macbook with M4 chip and a desktop PC with HDMI & DP out, iDock M10 is the best model for you. It’s a new model and will be available in about 2 months.

Are you using a single monitor setup, or a dual one?

iDock C20 vs. iDock M10:

  1. If you use iDock C20, you will only get two duplicate screens. While iDock M10 supports dual monitor setup with extended screens for MacBook (M4 chip or above)
  2. iDock M10 connects to a desktop PC via an HDMI and a DP port.

Hi Cecilia,

Good to know. I am using 1 monitor

Hello,

Thanks for getting back to us and we are really sorry but as you know that our iDock C20 come for 2 USB-C laptops and your PC only have the DisplayPort and HDMI, so that this device not work for you.
Then the adapter you purchased I think it is USB-C to DisplayPort, but not DisplayPort to USB-C, so when switch to PC and the monitor not work.
In this way, I am recommend to consider our iDock C10 which is design for 1 USB-C laptop 1 desktop with DisplayPort and HDMI ports.
